Location

This bike adventure takes place in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, just a short drive from the vibrant city of Marrakech. The High Atlas Mountains are a spectacular setting for a mountain biking trip with hundreds of miles of dusty single-track just waiting to be explored. With many years of experience guiding in the region, your local hosts can help you explore this region’s hidden riding potential.

The scenery makes for an impressive backdrop to your journey. The rugged and remote terrain has resisted the pressured of the modern world and feels like a window into a bygone era. Dramatic valleys offer vivid contrasts with the lush green irrigated fields along the valley bottom set against the barren rocky scree slopes that lead up to the snow-capped peaks.
The area is dotted with the villages and towns of the Berber people; their characteristic stone houses nestled picturesquely into steep hillsides. This region of Morocco remained isolated until the early 20th century and for a long time the fiercely independent local people resisted French colonisation. To this day the Berber people retain a strong sense of their unique identity and operate in many ways independently of the Moroccan government. The regions rich cultural heritage makes it the perfect destination for an adventure.

What to Expect

Day 1: Marrakech
We will be waiting for you at the airport in Marrakech. We then transfer you to the hotel/Riad in the heart of the Medina. You can spend the afternoon visiting Marrakech.

Day 2: Marrakech – Oukaimeden – Imlil
Transfers from Marrakech to Ski resort of Oukaimeden at 2660m, ride from Oukaimeden uphill to Tizi Addi, we will ride then a technical singletrack down to Tachedirt valley, and then to Tingherine from here we will climb up to Tizi Tamatert 2300m, from here ride down on singletrack to Imlil, overnight in Imlil.

Day 3: Imlil – Id Aissa
Today we are going over the pass Tizi Mzik at 2400m, Our bikes are transported by a mule and we are all walking to the pass. Then we will hit the road again with our bikes. A nice but difficult – single track – descent over rough and sometimes steep slopes through the beautiful valley of Ouazzaden to the village of Id Aissa.

Day 4: Ouirgane – Amizmiz Valley
This is a day of singletrack. The Guest house is at nearly 1800 m in altitude and today is the day to ‘cash in’ on the altitude! This path links three or four villages as we traverse from one to the other. There are a couple of little climbs of 3-400m which catapult us into incredibly fast sections. We stop for lunch in a secluded wooded part of the riverbed where mint tea is waiting for our arrival. After lunch we’re off again.
A short warm up of 2 km and we’re crossing a large dam to find the entrance to yet another incredible ribbon of singletrack to a spectacular gorge. This is truly breathtaking scenery to match some of the best singletrack in the world! From here we have a gentle ride to the gite 10km outside Amizmiz (1005m) this day will take us to Ait Zitoune village where we can enjoy a nice hammam after a long ride.

Day 5: Amizmiz – Ait Hamed
On the way to our next destination we make a cycle through olive groves to Berber house. There we enjoy freshly baked bread from the wood oven, olives and Min tea with a local family. We continue uphill through the Middle Atlas until we reach our lunch stop. During the meal enjoy a nice view. And it’s time to go on, another 300 m high, until we reach the pass. Through a high plateau we bike on single trails and slopes up to our accommodation in Ait Hamed.

Day 6: Ait Hamed – Ijoukak
We start with a gentle traverse and climb to the head of the pass. This includes a 10 minute hike-a-bike but the rewards the top are incomprehensible! From here the singletrack is fast and flowing to start and as it drops in height becomes more technical into the riverbed. One of the sections of singletrack runs through a dry riverbed. From slow, super technical to smooth and flat out and everything in between! This continues for hours, without a letup anywhere. The finale is a rickety bridge crossing which takes us to the van for a late lunch. After lunch you can either transfer in the van to Ijoukak for the last night in the Mountains.

Day 7: Ijoukak – Ouirgane – Marrakech
Starting after breakfast from the gite, this is the last day on the bike and possible the best! First step riding up to the pass, amazing view over the Atlas Mountains, after that an amazing singletrack take you to Ouirgane where your end bike trip, after heading back to Marrakech.

Day 8: Marrakech – Airport
After breakfast, transfers to Marrakech Airport

It’s suggested that people who cycle at a moderate intensity for more than 90 minutes, need to replace between 30g and 65g of carbohydrates per hour and we would thoroughly recommend bringing some of these with you, as well as some energy bars.
